In this guide, we provide basic information about developing your first website. We will cover a range of topics, from the basics of domain names, and web hosting, to choosing your design. Our goal is to ensure that you understand the basic concepts
Domain Names
What is a Domain Name?
A domain name serves as the digital address of your website. It functions like a virtual signpost that directs visitors to your online presence, while also conveying your brand or website name.
What does a Domain Name look like?
A domain name typically has two main parts: the website name and the extension. For instance, in the domain name "example.com", "example" is the website name and ".com" is the extension. The website name is usually the business or brand name, while the extension indicates the nature of the website.
Choosing an Effective Domain Name
Some guidelines and considerations to assist in selecting a domain name that is memorable, relevant, and capable of standing out in the digital landscape:
- How accessible is your domain name? The shorter it is, the better as a longer domain name can be difficult to remember and type out. Additionally, you should try to refrain from using numbers or hyphens, as these are not as user-friendly.
- Is your chosen domain name in line with the image you want to portray of your organisation or website? It should be a reflection of what you do and offer, as well as being easy to spell and pronounce.
- Investigate common extensions. While ".com" is the most popular, there are many other options that can be divided into categories such as business-related (.biz) and country (.au, .ca, .uk, nz etc). Please note, different rules may apply to country-specific domains for your region. Once you have a few ideas in mind, it’s time to register the domain name for your website.
The first step is to visit a domain name registrar, like Namecheap, GoDaddy, or 1&1 IONOS. You will be able to search for availability of the desired domain name on this platform and run a few basic checks to ensure that the domain name, or something similar, isn’t already taken by someone else.
Once you have selected the most suitable option (ensuring that it meets all of the criteria mentioned earlier), you can purchase it.
Paying for your Domain Name
You will need to purchase your domain name in order to use it. This is done through the registrar, (see above). The cost of purchasing your domain name will depend on the type of TLD you choose. The more popular types, such as .com and .org usually come with a higher price tag than other less popular ones. It’s also worth noting that you typically have to pay an annual fee to renew your domain name.
Make sure you save the login details as they'll be needed later once your site has been created.
An important note: there’s no need to pay for hosting when you purchase your domain name as all of Bizink’s website subscriptions include website hosting.
Web Hosting
Web Hosting is the process of storing your website's data on a server in order to make it available to users over the internet. This involves renting space and bandwidth from a web hosting provider, allowing you to connect your computer or device with an internet service provider (ISP).
Our managed Cloud Servers mean you don't need to worry about server management. We take care of all the server-related issues, including security updates and operating system patches, leaving you free to focus on your clients and your website content.
Our hosted servers ensure high performance with their advanced caching mechanism and features that dramatically improve the loading time of your website.
Along with that, robust security measures, including dedicated firewalls, regular security patching, security (SSL) certificate, and IP whitelisting, protect your website from potential threats.
What is an SSL Certificate?
You may have noticed web URLs start with “http” or “https.” The https represents a more secure site that has a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) certificate. SSL certificates provide a layer of encryption and protection for your visitors.
Internet users associate SSL with the padlock that appears in your browser's address bar when you enter the secure area of a website. They know to look for this before entering any personal or financial information online.
Hex Codes
In the simplest terms, a hex code is like the DNA of a colour.
A hex code is a system that digital screens use to identify colours. It's a six-digit alphanumeric code that represents the precise blend of red, green, and blue light needed to display a specific colour on your screen. This might seem like a lot of technical jargon, but it's actually quite straightforward once you break it down.
Now, why is this important? It means that we can replicate colours, giving consistency across your brand.
Your hex codes may have been supplied when you designed your logo, but if you’re not sure what they are don’t worry, just send us your logo and we can use a tool to find them for you.
Completing your Onboarding Form
Completing your onboarding form should take about 5-10 minutes. You'll need to provide some basic information about business, including your business name, address, domain name, and contact details.
We also need a little background on who you help and what you do. Don’t worry about having this perfect - you’ll be able to edit it yourself later.
Once this form is completed, we'll be ready to start building your website!
Choosing your Design
Have a look through the design gallery on our site for the layouts we offer. Once you select a design your firm's branding will be applied to this layout.
Please note: only Wave, Capsule, Tab & Radius designs are available for Express websites.
Choosing the right design for your website is a vital step in creating an online presence that truly represents your brand. The different designs offered here each have their unique features, and understanding these can help you make an informed choice that aligns with your brand's personality and goals.
- Wave Design: This is ideal if you're seeking a modern, streamlined look. It features a combination of fluid shapes and clean lines, perfect for showcasing professionalism while maintaining a contemporary feel.
- Capsule Design: As the name suggests, this design uses capsule-shaped elements across the site. It's flexible, allowing you to adjust sections on each page to suit your needs. If you're looking for a playful, modern look, this might be the design for you.
- Tab Design: This is a new theme which is based on our Wave design, except without the Wave element. It has blocky, square features but all the same elements of a flexible design.
- Radius Design: Radius is our newest theme, built on our flexible platform, and offers quite a different look. Please note: the site will be customised to suit your brand, colours and images. The flexible layout allows you to move various sections around to suit you.
- Foto Design: This design is vibrant and impactful, featuring a prominent photograph on the homepage. If you have a compelling, high-quality image that encapsulates your brand, Foto Design could be an excellent choice.
- Align Design: Here, your brand logo sits at the centre, with dedicated sections on the home page for services, testimonials, and packages. It's a good pick if you want your brand identity to take center stage.
- Arc Design: This design features a full-screen image on the homepage, rounded design elements, and bold colours. It's ideal if you want to use striking imagery to create a strong online presence.
- Block Design: This design is minimalistic, with thoughtful use of colour and typography. If you're aiming for an understated, classy impression, Block Design might be the one for you.
- Angular Design: This design helps convert visitors into clients. With prominent calls to action and great use of photography, it's a good choice for firms looking to grow.
Remember, the design you choose should not only look good but also serve its purpose - to communicate your brand's message effectively, engage visitors, and convert them into clients. Consider your brand's personality, the type of content you'll be sharing, and what you want your website visitors to do (such as book a demo, read case studies, or contact you).
